CMIC is a non-for-profit organization incorporated in February 2009. CMIC obtains support and funding from a variety of sources:

  • Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM)
  • Canadian mining and exploration sectors
  • Mining Association of Canada (MAC)
  • Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)
  • Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC)
  • In-kind contributions by members and other industry and government organizations

CMIC does not directly fund research, but acts as a facilitator and catalyst to promote collaboration, facilitate communications, and link the needs of industry with the capabilities of researchers and with opportunities for funding.

CMIC is seeking to expand the innovation capacity of Canada by creating additional research capacity via virtual centres of excellence and inter-institutional and multi-disciplinary collaborative research undertakings.
