Exploration Initiative
Champions: François Robert
Board link: James Franklin, Richard Moore
The CMIC Exploration Initiative is making excellent progress and has now defined its priorities for exploration research: Discovery Criteria, Discovery Technology, and Data to Knowledge.
The initiative is supported by thirteen companies, NRCan (Geological Survey of Canada), and PDAC, and is being driven by a working group composed of
Dan Brisbin (Cameco)
Andrew Davies (Teck)
Graeme Davis (Kinross)
Martin Doyle (De Beers)
Jim Franklin (Ur Energy)
Alan Galley (GSC)
Kelly Gilmore (HudBay)
Ian Graham (Western Potash)
Richard Moore (PDAC)
Rob Penczak (Goldcorp)
François Robert (Barrick)
Ross Sherlock (Goldfields)
Ielca Torok (Vale)
Lawrence Winter (Altius)
Sean Whiteford (Cliffs)
The committee is supported by Dick Tosdal, a consultant to the working group. Recent meetings with NSERC have been quite cordial and have identified significant possibilities for joint industry-NSERC funding of a major research program.
Executive Director
Champion and Board link: Engin Özberk
The Executive Committee is currently engaged in the final stage of interviews for a permanent Executive Director, and we hope to be able to announce the successful candidate soon.
We would also like to thank Alicia Blancarte, the Executive Director during CMIC's inaugural year, and Tom Hynes, our interim ED, for their efforts on our behalf.
Branding and Communication
Champion: Will Westgate
Board link: all members
A new committee has recently been struck to advise on branding and communication issues for CMIC.
Through the good offices of 3M, they have recently initiated a detailed survey of Board members to determine the "brand" that the Board sees as appropriate for CMIC. They are currently also providing advice to the CIM technical staff and CMIC secretariat working on the new CMIC web site, which we expect will be up and running this fall.
The Branding and Communication committee is composed of:
Will Westgate (3M)
Gordon Winkel (SMART)
Dave Lefebure (BC Ministry EMPR)
Ferri Hassani (McGill U.)
Michel Jébrak (UQAM)
P.S. Thank you to CIM for all their work on the CMIC web site, and especially to Rosy Saadeh and Angela Hamlyn for their technical advice.
Cyanide Code
Champion: Tom Hynes
Board link: Peter Kondos
Discussions are underway currently to organize two workshops in October, one in Vancouver and one in Toronto, on the Cyanide Code.
The Code is a voluntary, third party certified, code on compliance for the same use and transportation of cyanide. The workshops will be co-sponsored by:
International Cyanide Management Institute
CMIC
Mining Association of Canada
Barrick Gold Corp.
NRCan (CANMET-MMSL)
Further information will be posted as details are confirmed.
